The first direct reference to the game of poker is in New Orleans in 1830.It is thought to be derived from the French game Poque which roots lie in the fifteenth century. It has also been linked with ancient games of bluff from Persia, Egypt and China.
The popularity of poker in America spread through out the 1830's from the Mississippi river boats, across the country by wagon and railroad. Almost every town in the Wild West had a saloon with a poker table.
The legendary Wild Bill Hickock was shot dead during a poker game in Deadwood, South Dakota. At the time he was holding two pair, black aces and black eights. This is known as the Dead Mans Hand.
